Deep down I have always known I had allergies. I knew for certain I could not tolerate certain metals on my skin. One thing I never understood was why I felt like I had a cold all year round!
This seemed to get worse over the years until my nose would be completely blocked during the evenings. I was having trouble sleeping as my sinuses would flare up. These allergies caused me so much misery and discomfort that trying to get to sleep seemed like such a challenge – I love my sleep – need lots of sleep and cannot function without it!
I had to do something but had no idea what. My frustrations grew as I was getting nowhere getting to the root cause of my allergies. I tried nasal sprays and allergy relief medications yet nothing made even a slight difference.
Luckily, I was already on a toxic free journey where I was using more natural products as I wanted to reduce chemical exposure in my home. During my research, I came across articles on ingredients in conventional laundry washing powder. This is when I looked deeper to find recipes to make your own. I stopped buying conventional laundry soap and experiments began as I created my own laundry soap, tweaking my recipe every now and again…. yes, I was a bit of a chemist in my kitchen!
The best thing was I knew exactly what was in it. As I had read it takes months to remove all the chemicals from conventionally ‘washed’ clothes, I knew I had to stick with it. I became dedicated even with a super busy family life. I made time to make this powder whenever necessary, refusing to go back to the easy read-made way. Months later all of our clothes including towels and bedding stopped smelling of soap which was great – I did not like that smell anyway!
This spurred me on and I kept going, using my own laundry soap for the whole family – I could only see a benefit in continuing. After 6 months passed I realised that my blocked nose had stopped bothering me and I had not experienced it for months. It took me a while to work this out but I realised I was tucked up in bed and all the time inhaling the residual soap left in my bedding and this was the trigger and cause of irritation.
No medicines, no sprays, by accident I had found the root cause of my allergies and found a way to control the effects, truly amazing. I could get into bed and continue to breath without any sign of congestion – a total blessing!!
Moral of the story, only you can realise the impact and benefits from reducing chemicals around you. Something one person can tolerate, another cannot. My fear is for those who do not have sensitivities as their bodies tolerate chemicals which means they do not have a reason to start on a path to toxic free or clean living.
What is Toxic Free or Clean Living?
For me, it is simply less toxic chemicals:
switching from ready-made products. i.e, vinegar and water instead of ready-made window cleaning products or, bicarbonate of soda for cleaning instead of other abrasives
cutting back on products and limiting their use, i.e, toilet bleach – instead using a combination of other cleaning ingredients like bicarbonate of soda with essential oils, therefore using less bleach.
If making your own products or using raw ingredients does not appeal to you, then go for ethical brands dedicated to making cleaner products.
With the aim of reducing expense, waste and harsh chemical exposure, for you and your family.
What have you got to lose by trying cleaner living?
